What is the Giving Challenge?

The Giving Challenge is the third part of the Better Together campaign. It is separate to the Better Together Video Competition and the Charity Hero Award, and comes with a €10,000 prize fund that will go to the cause that receives the most 'unique donors'.

Note: you can still donate to your favourite causes - but these donations will not be counted towards as part of the Giving Challenge.

How Does It Work?

Between 4 October and 25 November members of the public were asked to donate to any cause via the Donate button featured alongside many of the videos entered into the Better Together Video Competition*.

(* When organisations were submitting their videos to the video competition, they were also given an option to sign up for the Giving Challenge. You can now donate to those organistions, via their Better Together video pages, that signed up.)

  1. Frequently Asked Questions »

Who is Behind the Better Together Campaign (and Giving Challenge)?

Better Together is an initiative of The Wheel, a support and representative body for the Irish community and voluntary sector. The Wheel created the Better Together campaign in order to help raise public awareness and support for the work being done by literally thousands of charities, community groups, clubs and associations up and down the country.

What is the Purpose of the Giving Challenge?

The purpose of the Giving Challenge is simple - to help struggling Irish community and voluntary groups to raise much-needed donations for their organisations. By taking part in the Giving Challenge, these organisations can then ask their supporters to donate to their cause in the hope of winning the €10,000 Giving Challenge prize. The great thing about the Giving Challenge is that, even if you do not win, you still get to keep all donations you receive (minus a 5% donation processing fee levied by our official Better Together partner, Sponsor.ie).

Is the Giving Challenge a Separate Competition?

The Giving Challenge is a third competition of the Better Together campaign for 2011. It is separate from both the Video Competition and the Charity Hero Award (both of which are dependent on public voting, followed by a judging process) - the Giving Challenge is entirely dependent on the number of 'unique donors' a cause receives.

Who Is Taking Part in the Giving Challenge?

When organisations were submitting their videos to the Better Together Video Competition, they were given an option to also sign up for the separate Giving Challenge. All of those organisations are now participant within the Giving Challenge.

Define a 'Unique Donor' and a 'Cause'

A UNIQUE DONOR is defined as a single donation to a cause (i.e. a video) having a unique email address. Multiple donations to a cause from the same email address count as one unique donor.

A CAUSE is defined as a video competition entry. An organisation may enter more than one video. Unique donors are tracked against individual videos and are not aggregated across all of an organisation's video entries.

How Many Times Can I Donate

The Giving Challenge counts a 'unique donor' as an individual email address. So, although you can donate to a particular video as many times as you like, if you use the same email address for each donation then your combined donations will count just once for the purpose of the Giving Challenge. If you wish to make multiple donations and have them recorded as 'unique donors', then you must use a different email address every time. Note: using the same credit card for each donation will not effect the 'unique donor' status (which is solely dependent on your individual email address).

The €10,000 Giving Challenge prize will go to the cause that the highest number of unique donors (which will not necessarily be the cause that received the largest amount of monetary donations).

So, you can donate as many times as you like to as many videos as you like, and rest assured that the donation will be securely recorded and forwarded to the relevant cause. But remember - whether your donate to your favourite video one time or ten times, it will count just once for the Giving Challenge if you use the same email address every time.

When Does the Giving Challenge End?

The Giving Challenge closes to all donations at 5pm sharp on 25 November. The winner will be announced at the Better Together Awards on 1 December, 2011.

  2. Ready to Donate? »

The Better Giving Challenge closed at 5pm, 25th November, 2011. However, you can still donate to your favourite causes - but please note that these donations will not be counted towards as part of the Giving Challenge.

If you are looking for a cause to support, use the browse function to find causes by type (i.e. Animal Welfare, Age Related or Mental Health), or use the map to find a cause in your area.

Once you have found a cause you would like to support, click on the "donate" button above your chosen cause's video. You will be directed to a secure donation page (managed by Sponsor.ie). Your donation, no matter how large or small, will be helping to make Ireland a better place.

You can now also make as many donations as you like using both the same email address and credit card!
